Discussion:
[scribus] receving error message "can not write the file" (pdf)

I'm using scribus version 1.3.3.13 running on windows. I'm on a deadline.
When I use "export" and then use "save as pdf" A dialogue box comes up with
a list of errors, although none very serious. I hit "ignore errors" and
then another dialogue box comes up. I hit "save" and then I get the error
message.

I'm hoping someone can help me quickly - I've searched prior postings, faqs,
etc. Thanks!

Judy

need more info.

Post a screenshot, possibly. and/or a verbatim cut-n-paste of any errors.

I'm guessing it is a permissions problem, like, can't write to output
dir. Or maybe your disk is full? Check those things.

are you writing in a directory which is write protected?

do you have enough space left on the medium.

What OS? Offhand it sounds like you are trying to write to a folder
where you don't have write permissions. On Linux you sign on as
"root" and cd to the directory just above the one you are writing
to. To free up directory "foo" the statement is
chmod 777 foo
If you have windows I don't know how you fix it.

Um, windows? It says "on windows" as the 7th and 8th words.

OK, someone who is windows-proficient please answer the query.
I have been using mostly Linux since about 1996.

No, I have permission for this directory and there's room on the hard drive.

If you set up a dummy document (no content or "Hello world") can
you export it as pdf to that directory?

Since you are under a deadline I suggest you send me just the sla
file and any included files (illos etc.) as attachments to an email
and I will try to create a pdf file for you. If I can't do that then you
might want to review the history of steps you went through to
create this document.

If you open Computer Management (Start -> Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Computer Management) and open Event Viewer (under System Tools on the left) and then click on Application, is there anything listed at the time you got the error message? You may need to attempt the export again and note the time.

Alternatively, is it possible that one of the errors reported when you start the export to PDF process is more serious than you thought? It might be a good idea to list what those errors are, just in case.

Can you create a simple document (SLA) and export that to PDF?
