Discussion:
[Scribus] A dotted line...

Dear list,

We're in the middle of producing Mute Magazine 06 in Scribus 1.3.3.9
(should be out next July!), and so far so good. :-)

For this we need to import a few illustrations originally done in Quark
(I exported the document from Quark as pdf, and than converted them to
ps). All goes well besides one small detail: somehow in Scribus all
dotted lines have changed to dashed lines.

I tried to simply re-create the dotted lines in Scribus, but no luck:
just dashed lines.

So... any ideas how to produce a dotted line, other than typing
............... ?

best!

Hi Femke,

heel makkelijk:

Lijn invoegen, dan F2 (Eigenschappen) > Lijn > Lijntype.

Vielen Dank Christoph!

Sorry I was not clearer: I did try all kinds of line-variations and
endings, but end up with dashed lines any ways; the 'dotted' option
under 'type of line' just gives smaller dashes, but still no dots (same
issue in Inkscape by the way).

Bonjour Femke,

I guess this calls for a bug report. To my knowledge, very few comments
on the line options came to the list. So yours might just be that it was
not tested enough before.

My workaround has so many drawbacks and is so akward that I am reluctant
to tell it but nonetheless... You can use fill character and tabulator
to achieve such a dotted line. It will work in some cases...

Best to you too!

OK will file! I do like your solution though, but does not really work
for dotted circles, does it? ;-)

It does. Create the dots the way Louis described it, convert the circle to a
b?zier curve, select both items, then use Item > Attach Text To Path

Did you actually print the document, or just view it on the screen???
This might just be a screen resolution artifact and not the actual printed output.

Hi Femke, glad to hear from you!

The problem with Scribus is that it does not implement the dash-array in
a way accessible via the UI. I'm unsure as if it's available from
another file, but I already discussed it with the devs on IRC and they
are aware of it.

There is a way to do it in Inkscape which is fairly easy (but you gotta
know it).

First, create your line. Set your width then set the cap property to
round cap.

Now open the XML Editor and locate the "stroke-dasharray" property from
the line style. Set it to 0, x. It is very important to have the first
number set to zero to create a perfect circle, the second will be the
gap size in pixels. To have it in points or another unit, insert say 0,
8pt and when you press set it will convert pt to px automatically. I
know this is not exactly what you'd like but at least it works.

You can have up to 11 numbers in this array to keep them PostScript
compatible. Inkscape will draw up to 64, if you wanna go the raster way.

Hope this helps!

Dear Pierre-Luc and Dazzle,

Thanks for your tips (both interesting and useful workarounds) --
happily dotting away here!
